Users of the app will be notified if there is a high-speed chase less than two miles away.
We’ve all been there. Your Chevrolet Camaro is driving down the highway, minding your business, passing slower cars at the speed limit, and weaving back-and-forth as necessary to avoid a collision. You suddenly see strange lights behind and in front of your car, then another, then blamo. Some crazy cop car takes you out. You discover that you were in the middle of an intense chase, and you didn’t know it.
Maybe that’s not quite right. This could be a Ford Mustang driver who rolls down the highway after hitting many bystanders outside of a car show or a shirtless person driving a lifted RAM pickup truck across a field. These people might have pulled over if they had the PursuitAlert app installed on their phones before the friendly officers grabbed them through the side windows.
PursuitAlert, a smartphone app, is not only funny, but it is also very real and could save lives. It sends notifications to any smartphone user who has the app installed when there is a high-speed chase less than two miles away. Although it may seem unlikely that drivers would not notice a stream or lights approaching, high-speed chases can be quite surprising. This is especially true at intersections with cross traffic, where drivers may not be aware that a speeding driver approaches a red light and has no intention of stopping. PursuitAlert can quickly notify innocent drivers to avoid a potentially fatal crash.
The system is currently active with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department of South Carolina. This was the first law enforcement agency in the country to adopt PursuitAlert. The system was created by the company PursuitAlert in 2016. They hope to expand the service to other parts of the United States. It is free to download the app for Android and iPhone users.
