This is something we cannot stress enough: it will continue to be rear-wheel driven.
Although the next-generation BMW 2 Series will not be available until 2021, we have seen plenty of spy shots. The prototypes were camouflaged in various colors, while others were not wearing makeup. This revealed a marked departure from the current model’s design. We are able to share today’s first spy video of this sports coupe from a recent workout at Nurburgring gym.
We’re looking at an M Performance version, as was the case in the latest batch of spy photos. It’s likely to be called the “M240i.” Some reports suggest that BMW will change the name to the “M245i” to highlight a power boost. However, it remains to be seen. We can see a prototype running full tilt around the Nordschleife and torturing its tires.
Although the spy video does not show the speed, the loud screeching sounds indicate that the test driver was trying to make it fast. BMW also added a roll cage to the rear of the 2 Series prototype, indicating that it was there for high-speed testing. In an automotive world that is becoming increasingly heavier and more artificial, the car appears as agile and nimble as a compact rear wheel-drive coupe.
Even though the roof is not visible, you can see the trunk lid spoiler and hood bulge beneath the swirly camouflage. Those angular exhaust finishes will likely be exclusive to M Performance. The M1 will come with a pair of round tips, while the M2 will have an additional pair.
As the 2 Series prototype sat very close to the road, it must have had a track-focused suspension setup. There was not much room in the wheelhouse. BMW could have used orange side markers to indicate that it was testing the US-spec model. The silver mirror caps also suggest that this was the M Performance derivative.
The wraps will be completed in 2021, with the M240i/M245i headliner and the later in the decade.
