It’s hard to find anything more exciting than a Chrysler pentastar concept car with Lamborghini’s raging bull.
Chrysler called it the “ultimate mid engined touring sedan”. It is basically a four door, stretched Lamborghini Jalpa. We think it’s worth your attention. It was first introduced at 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show as a symbol of Chrysler’s Lamborghini takeover. The fully functional concept was displayed in the Pentastar logo of Chrysler with Lamborghini’s raging bull.
The Portofino is a design evolution of the Chrysler Navajo, which was originally built only as a clay model. Although the styling was modified to better reflect the relationship between the two brands, the Portofino isn’t one of the Lamborghini concepts that you may remember. Coggiola, Turin, Italy built the car. To make it spacious enough for rear passengers, the cabin had to be extended by 66cm (26inches). The Portofino is designed without the use of B-pillars. All four doors open upwards, allowing for easy access to a comfortable interior. The cabin was decorated with leather in three different colors of blue. This allowed the driver to adjust the switchgear and the steering wheel to achieve the perfect position.
A 3.5-liter V8 engine produced 255 horsepower (187 megawatts) and 229 pounds-feet (311 newton meters) respectively. The power was delivered to the road by a five-speed manual transmission. Rear-wheel-drive sedan was able to achieve a respectable top speed at 149 mph (240 km/h). One was made, and it was heavily damaged in an accident in 1991. Chrysler paid $300,000. The restoration was done by Metalcrafters, Costa Mesa, California. The Portofino can now be seen at Chrysler’s headquarters, in Auburn Hills (Michigan). Last note: Legend has it that Lamborghini folks didn’t like the design of the concept, and described the Portofino to them as a “big potato.”
