It will not arrive before 2021.
The current generation was redesigned in 2018. The brand’s name will not disappear, however Toyota already confirmed that a successor to the small car is in development. We are able to share the first spy photos of this new car today.
Let’s start by addressing this issue. The gallery below shows two different prototypes, despite identical registration plates. The new Aygo is shown in the first gallery, most likely with its production body and lights. The rest of these shots show a test mule that is largely reminiscent the new Euro-spec Yaris.
Early rumors of the next-gen Aygo suggested that the city car would switch from the current hatchback body style to a more comfortable shape with crossover design cues. This design change is not confirmed by the first spy photo, especially considering its tiny wheels.
The new Aygo will initially be available with combustion power (think three-cylinder naturally-aspirated gas engines). However, a zero emission powertrain could be added to the lineup at a later stage in the model’s lifespan. Toyota acknowledged last year that there wasn’t yet a viable business case for small-sized electric cars, but that the market will shift quickly to more emission-free vehicles.
The new Aygo will not be available in production until at least 12 months. We should see more prototypes on public roads. This will give us an early look at Toyota’s smallest car in Europe.
Although nothing has been confirmed, it seems that the Aygo’s PSA siblings the Citroen C1 or the Peugeot 107 will not be receiving direct replacements. Toyota claims it sells 100,000 Aygos annually and that a new generation will allow them to “go further, not back,”
