Rumor: Chevy Camaro ZL1 getting CT5-V Blackwing engine for Swan Song

The 2023 model year would see it go on sale.

An intriguing rumor has emerged: The Camaro ZL1 will receive the 6.2-liter supercharged engine from the Cadillac CT5/V Blackwing. This is according to “a source deep within GM,” referring to Trend. This will provide the Camaro with a final power boost before it leaves the Chevy lineup.

The CT5-V Blackwing’s higher-output LT4 V8 makes a massive 668 horsepower (498 kilowatts), and 659 (893 Newton meters) . The ZL1 already features a smaller version of the LT4 engine, which produces 650 hp (485 kW), and 650 lbf (881 Nm).

Motor Trend rumor suggests that the Camaro ZL1 models could also receive performance components from CT5-V Blackwing. However, the report does not provide specifics. This could also include Cadillac’s carbon ceramic brakes.

Rumours claim that the ZL1 will be available for only two model years. Motor Trend suggests that the vehicle will arrive in 2023.

According to rumors, Chevy may have canceled plans for a sixth-gen Camaro Z/28 with the same high-revving V8 engine as the Corvette Z06. Even a manual gearbox was planned for the model. The automaker realized that there was not enough demand for the model to warrant the investment.

We are unsure if the plan to install the more powerful LT4 in the Camaro represents a compromise between not improving the model and investing in engineering a Z/28. The ZL1 isn’t going to be upgraded, so it won’t cost as much as a new vehicle.

Rumours abound about the Camaro being reborn as an entirely new vehicle, after the current one is gone. The model could be transformed into an electric performance sedan.
