Its appearance is deceiving.
We now know Aston Martin plans expand its DBX line-up to include hybrid variants. A new set of spy photos gives us a preview of what we can expect. It’s obvious that the exterior has not changed, so it’s easy to assume this is a regular DBX. The photos do show the DBX with a yellow sticker in its rear window. This tells Nurburgring firefighters that the SUV is equipped with an electrified engine.
Tobias Moers, CEO of Aston Martin, revealed earlier this week that the mild-hybrid DBX would be available before the end. This is most likely the prototype car in the spy photos. Aston will likely pair a 3.0-liter straight-six supercharged engine with an electric motor. However, we have no indication of its power. AMG’s twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 produces 542 horsepower (699 Newton-meters) and 516 poundfeet (699 kilowatts).
Because we can’t see the fuel door on this rear quarter panel, it is unlikely that this is the plug in variant. Aston is not expected to release the plug-in DBX until 2023, for the 2024 model years. It feels a little premature to have it in testing. The DBX’s V8 will be paired with an electric motor to produce 700 horsepower (521 kilowatts). Its peak output can reach 800 hp (596 kW).
Aston will offer a variety of DBX variants by 2024. This includes a seven-seater model and something more sporty. The mild-hybrid version was spotted being tested near the race track. It is the key to Aston’s future success as the SUV accounts for over half of its global sales within a year of it being introduced. Aston’s SUVs are very popular at the moment. Offering more powertrain options only makes Aston’s products more attractive to a wider audience.
