GM Stops Selling 3.0L Duramax Diesel Due To Supplier Shortage: Report

This is definitely not something you want to hear if your goal is to buy one soon.

General Motors is alleged to have stopped selling the LM2 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine. If we believe the anonymous tip to Fast Lane Truck which shows a copy the message sent to GMC dealers operators and sales managers dated August 27, 2021.

The message stated that the availability of the LM2 diesel engine had decreased to zero due to a supplier shortage.

It is important to note that the tip was not specific about the shortage or any plans for the future. Dealers were encouraged to offer gasoline-powered versions (5.3-liter V8 or 6.2-literV8) by the tip, which removed any ordering restrictions.

Currently, the LM2 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine powers a variety GM trucks, SUVs, including the Chevy Silverado and Tahoe; GMC Yukon, Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade.

This report is still being filed as a rumor until GM issues an official statement. We expect more information about the shutdown to emerge in the next week. So we’ll keep you updated. The Duramax diesel engine option for these vehicles is still available via the relevant websites as of the writing.

In a July report, Ford also claimed that it is dropping the diesel engine option in the F-150 lineup. According to the report, the 3.0-liter PowerStroke V6 Diesel engine that made its debut with the F-150 in 2018, will be leaving the engine option lineup. However, specific reasons were not mentioned in the previous report.

The PowerStroke V6 is still available on Ford’s online configurator, just like the Duramax diesel at the time of this article’s publication.
