Ford could give the GT a V8 engine before production is over.
Rumours are circulating about a vehicle we didn’t expect to see on the road. The Ford GT is being given a final edition package that will dress up its production run. It may also have a higher horsepower. Ford may send its supercar out with a powerful American V8.
This is the second Ford GT V8 rumor that we have heard. An earlier report cited an anonymous source who claimed that a GT test car sounded unlike any second-generation model. These photos show that the rear fascia has lost its diffuser and lower grille, while makeshift bumper pads can be seen. The exhaust tips look very distinct, and you can see an oil cap just before the spoiler. It doesn’t matter what the purpose of this cap is, it won’t be found in that area on a GT. This means something mechanically different is occurring here.
This, combined with the exposed bottom, the exhaust tips and the location of the sightings, makes for more than a few sketchy claims. Ford could use a GT body for testing something totally unrelated to the GT. This wouldn’t be the first time that an automaker has hidden a new powertrain under a familiar wrapper. This could also be an indication that the track-only model is in the works. Pushrod engines can fit a 7.3-liter V8 in the 3.5-liter space. They are smaller than double overhead cam designs. It should not be difficult in terms of size.
Let’s not forget one last thought about this crazy V8 idea. In 2022, the second-generation Ford GT will be retired from production. It will be Ford’s last internal combustion supercar when it is done. This means that dropping a pushrod V8 under a glass for one last ride full of American power is not just a fitting way of driving into the sunset. It’s almost mandatory.
