Do you see the similarities?
The wedge era was popularized in the 1960s. One of the first to adopt the trend was the Alfa Romeo Carabo, but many believe the DAF 55 Siluro is the precursor to the wedge car. Italdesign was a key player in this design trend, with many cars being introduced between the 70s to the 80s. Relevant examples include the Maserati Boomerang or the BMW M1.
The DeLorean DMC-12 and Lotus Esprit have been left out of this gallery. This was published today by Italdesign’s digital media team. It includes the following text: “Icons Never Stop Inspiring.” Is there any trace of their heritage? This is a reference to Tesla’s new cybertruck with its polarizing wedge shape. It suggests that Franz von Holzhausen was inspired by the cars of Emmett Lathrop Brown and James Bond when he designed the lines for the electric truck.
Italdesign’s models were small sports cars (DMC-12 less so, though), and Tesla’s being large double-cab pickups, there are obvious differences. The Cybertruck doesn’t have to be a copy of the two-wheeled electric workhorse.
Although the Cybertruck is inspired by the past, it doesn’t look the same as any other truck or vehicle. It will be interesting to see if Tesla, or Elon Musk, responds to Italdesign’s allegation in the days ahead. We will keep an eye on any potential replies.
