Can the lighter 911 defeat an AMG with all wheel-drive and 200 horsepower more?
The German rivalry between Porsche and Mercedes-Benz continues. The new 911 Carrera is a delight to look at. It takes on different editions of the Mercedes AMG GT and this time, a GT63 S four door from Affalterbach faces off against a new Carrera S in Stuttgart. This is a quarter-mile competition, and if you recall from the last Mercedes-versus-Porsche race we featured, the 911 did quite well in the shorter distance.
However, this time things are different. We’re talking about a Carrera S and not a 4S, so the 911 only turns the rear wheels. Team Mercedes also has a GT63 S 4Matic. It sends power to all four corners. It has a lot of power, 470 kilowatts (630 HP) to the Porsche’s 331 kW (443 Hp). The mighty Merc has the 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 whereas the Porsche’s flat-six is turbocharged.
Although the 911 may seem to have the only advantage of weight, it is actually quite a feat. Significance Advantage – approximately 3,400 pounds (1.542 kilograms), versus not less than 4,550 lbs (2.100 kg) for the AMG four-door. All-wheel drive comes at a price.
The 911 is still a huge disadvantage. Even an all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S wouldn’t be able to match the AMG with its 200-hp advantage. We would normally leave this video unfinished. But, let’s face it, even with the extra 1,000 pounds, the GT63 S is so fast that we are left wondering if the Porsche driver ever tried to compete. We can only say that we are impressed that the 911 did not lose by a larger margin. Nevertheless, the cars were separated by a few car lengths.
But is this really fair? Although the Carrera 4S might have had a chance, we are still talking about a 911 against the Mercedes-AMG GT’s top tier. We predict that the 911 Turbo will tip the scales in the opposite direction, and Porsche fans will be just as excited to see a rematch.
