Tesla Model X Falcon Wing Door Slams Into London Bus

The falcon will not fly anytime soon.

The Tesla Model X is rarely discussed. It could be that there hasn’t been much news since the updated version was released in January along with the Model S Plaid. A more recent version was filmed in London, exiting a parking space and merging into traffic with Falcon Door up in air. It wasn’t long before disaster struck as the “flying door” crashed into the windshield of the London bus.

Our thoughts on the incident are perfectly summed up by the reaction of the scooter rider. It appears that the double-decker’s glass did not shatter, and the driver of the Model X was unhurt. The collision occurred at a low speed. Make that collisions, as the Falcon Door also struck the side of bus after the initial impact.

How could this happen? The answer is simple: ignorance. Below is a video that shows you how the Model X reacts if the doors are open. Apart from visual warnings on the digital dashboard and the infotainment screen, audio alerts are also given to the driver so it is almost impossible to forget to close your Falcon Doors.

It’s hard to miss the in-your face warnings, which makes us wonder what was going through the driver’s mind. This is going to lead to a large repair bill, as the entire mechanism will likely need to be replaced. These aren’t cheap. The accident occurred on the A111 in Southgate in London. Even if the door did malfunction, it’s not an excuse to drive the Model X recklessly.

If doors go down, it is worth noting that those in the back can still open the Falcon Door even if the battery goes out. The door’s speaker grille has a mechanical release. Once the latch has been released, pull the cable towards the front seats and manually lift the doors.
