2022 Ford Explorer ST Revealed with Rear-Wheel Drive and New ST-Line

The 2022MY lineup now includes the toothless ST and the tail-happy ST.

Ford has been offering an all-show-without-the-extra-go ST-Line trim level in Europe for a number of years, but it wasn’t until last year when the Edge received this version as the first US-bound ST-Line. The Explorer’s larger model year 2022 will get a variety of ST-like visual upgrades, but without the extra oomph of full-fat ST.

The Explorer ST-Line’s standard EcoBoost engine produces 300 horsepower (223 kilowatts). It is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford claims that the Explorer ST-Line’s exterior mirrors an fully-equipped Explorer ST, complete with a blacked-out grille, dual exhaust tips and 20-inch alloy wheels. It also features dark-tinted taillights and headlights. The glossy black model name lettering is finishing off the exterior changes.

The new Explorer ST-Line comes with a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen soundsystem and a heated steering column. On the tech side, there’s a 360-degree cam and a wireless charging station. The Blue Oval also includes an auto-dimming rearview and heated front seats. There are also red accents and ST-Line badges on the floor mats.

This new model also includes the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite driver and safety systems. These include adaptive cruise control with stop & go and evasive steering assist. The ST-Line is positioned between the XLT & Limited and it cuts $7,570 off the fully-fledged Explorer ST. It’s $2,575 less than the Explorer Enthusiast ST, which was introduced earlier in the year to make it more affordable and remove some features to lower the initial price.

Ford Explorer ST will offer a standard rear-wheel drive layout with an optional AWD option. This confirms a rumor that was circulated earlier in the week. The 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine is rated at 400 horsepower and 415 lbft (563 Nm) and sent to the rear axle via the 10-speed auto. The pricing details of the tail-happy SUV have not yet been revealed, but it is obvious that it will be less expensive than its all-paw counterpart.

The 2022 Explorer comes standard with a 400-hp engine for the King Ranch or Platinum flavors, in addition to the ST-Line and ST models. These two top-end trims now come standard with the Technology Package, which includes a 10.1 inch touchscreen, a 14 speaker B&O sound system and multi-contour seating.

The 2022 Explorer has the option of a captain’s chair or a second row bench seat, and can also choose from new Burgundy Velvet or Stone Blue colors. The XLT Sport Package has a new seat trim, and Timberline offers a second row bench seat option.
