2022 Kia Sportage makes its Euro debut with a familiar look and a shorter wheelbase

Next week, a GT Line model with a sportier look will be on display in Munich.

The global version of the Kia Sportage was launched online in June. features quirky design elements and customizable options. Three months later, the Korean Crossover makes its European debut, just days before a public appearance at the 2021 IAA in Munich next Wednesday.

It may look familiar, but it is different from the global model. There’s a reason. The gallery below contains official photos of the GT Line trim level. It has a unique front fascia design. For example, the radiator grille has a hexagonal design, while the bumper’s lower portion has a different layout, and the position for the adaptive cruise controller radar.

The European Sportage is significantly shorter than the model that’s available elsewhere in the world. If you look closely, you will notice that the rear doors are shorter and that the rear quarter panel has no window. This is due to the shorter wheelbase for the Old continent, which will be 2,680 millimeters (105.51 inches) compared to 2,755 (108.4 inches) for the global model. The length of the European crossover is 4,515mm (177.75in), which makes it 145mm (5.7in) shorter than the Sportage that we saw three months back.

The rest of the picture should look familiar, especially in the cabin, where the two-screen layout is unchanged. GT Line trim adds a few cool features, such as a flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel, carbon fibre decorations on the dashboard, special leather upholstery with white stitching, and embroidered GT Line letters.

Kia will offer the Euro-spec Sportage. It is described as the ” first European-specific Sportage” in its 28-year history. The model comes with a choice between hybrid, plug-in hybrids, gasoline engines, and diesel engines. All versions will come standard with a start stop system, in collaboration with Kia’s ADAS technology. This determines when and if the system should activate, such as when the vehicle approaches a stop sign or junction.
