Is the R420 project still possible?

A fascinating video taken at the Nurburgring shows Volkswagen taking an old prototype for its Golf R420 out from the garage to take it for a spin around the Nordschleife. The high-performance model has not been seen by VW in its garage for more than a year. So why is the company bringing it back? We believe this may indicate that VW is planning to build a few more of the high-performance model as a goodbye to the current generation Golf.
The Golf R400 concept. The 2.5-liter inline five cylinder engine of models such as the Audi RS3 would have produced 309 kilowatts, or 420 metric horses, as the model names refer to. This power would have been channeled to the roads by an all-wheel-drive system. It seems that a dual-clutch gearbox is possible, considering the speed of these shifts.

VW needs to move quickly if it wants the R420 to go on sale. The next-gen Golf is in development. Production will begin in June 2019, and sales will start in the fourth quarter. Rumours suggest that the next Golf R will pack 400 horsepower (298 kW). this could be from a mild hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder. It could be available as early as 2020.
