After the success of its Insignia-based Regal, Buick could add more Opel-based models into its North American lineup.

A report from Car & Driver suggests that Buick could be receiving more Opel-based models. It will be the Astra GTC this time, and Buick will get a 3-door coupe/hatch version based on the model. This could help it compete with the Hyundai Veloster in America. The report also says that a convertible/cabriolet GTC-based variant for Buick may also be in the cards. The United States has had mixed results with Opel-based models. There were some failures like the Saturn Astra, but the Buick Regal, which is Insignia-based, has been a huge success. Buick’s Astra GTC engine will likely be identical to the Opel model. It is a turbocharged 2.0 liter unit producing 250 PS (213kW/286 hp). Opel Astra GTC will have a six-speed manual transmission, as well as a limited slip differential to drive the car’s front-axle. FlexRide suspension is available with a compound crank rear axle, a Watt’s link and the GTC. This tech package would ensure a smooth ride for Buick on the North American market. However, it is difficult for automakers to balance the cost/benefit of making a small car in Europe that can be sold in North America.
