BMW Displays First 2 Series Coupe Made in Mexico

For the global market, the 2er will only be made in Mexico.

In July, the second-generation BMW 2 Series Coupe was unveiled. This is the latest version in G42 form. The 2er’s production has begun at BMW’s San Luis Potosi Mexico plant.

The BMW 2 Series will only be produced at this plant, unlike the previous generation, which was manufactured at the BMW Leipzig Plant in Germany. For the new 2 Series Coupe, the automaker has invested an additional $125 Million in Mexico’s plant.

“Two decades after its inception, our Plant has added a new model to their production line. The great talent of the San Luis Potosi team made this possible. This vehicle was assembled in Mexico, and we are proud of that. We will be able to show the immense capacity of Mexico with the 2 Series Coupe. “I am certain that this will prove to be the first of many successful launches,” Harald Gottsche (President and CEO BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosi) said.

The Mexican plant adaptations required for the production of the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe were the reason for the extra investment.

In particular, 82 new robots in the body shop were installed, and the existing robots were reprogrammed. Assembly personnel were also trained in how to use a two-door coupe, which is a different approach than the ones already used in the production line.

BMW’s Materials Analysis team has also updated the plant’s paint shop to create two new colors for the 2 Series Coupe: Thundernight Metallic and Brooklyn Gray. This is the 2er’s first vehicle’s paint, and it’s a brand new BMW color. It’s made exclusively in the San Luis Potosi facility.
