This is a rough estimate, but it’s very impressive.
Recently, the Corvette Z06 was spotted doing test runs at Milford Proving Grounds. This gave us a soundcheck for our new hot rod. Kyle Marsh, a mathematician, discovered that simple calculus could be used to estimate how fast the vehicle can propel itself to 60 mph using the same footage.
Marsh was able to clock the C8 Z06’s sprint at 60 mph in 2.5 seconds after crunching the numbers. You can take it with a grain, but it’s likely that you are wondering how Marsh got to the final number. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple and there won’t be any test after the lecture.
Marsh was able create a formula for calculating the vehicle’s velocity using footage. Although it may sound simple, there are many factors that can affect the results. To give just a few examples, the car didn’t start at the exact same place for each run. Additionally, the sound waves used to calculate shift points would be delayed due to the distance between the cameraman and the car.
The noise could be a confirmation of rumors that Z06 will use a road-friendly version of the C8.R racing car 5.5-liter V8. Although it is difficult to know for certain, footage shows that the vehicle used all of the first gear to reach 60 mph. Corvette models can have a longer first gear, but it’s a great talking point.
Although it is highly unlikely, the Z06 would be in the same airspace with vehicles such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and Rimac Concept_one. We’ll have to wait and see what Chevrolet has to say, but it is clear that things are looking up.
