There are not many surprises.
Stellantis Mexico shared four teaser photos of a new Dodge SUV on Twitter this week. The photos show a lot of camouflage and dark lighting, but the new Dodge SUV is not completely unknown. The new model appears to be a modified GAC SUV, but it may have some styling differences.
Camouflage covers the entire vehicle and creates a smaller grille than the GS5, but this could be intentional. It looks very similar to the bold, black trapezoidal grille on the discontinued Dodge Journey. The new Dodge and GS5 have the same side profile shapes and share the same rear- and front-end lighting signatures. Dodge will likely replace the GAC badge with its own branding.
Dodge has not yet revealed when the new model will be revealed, but we do have some information beyond the images. The GAC GS5 can be found in certain Latin American countries. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5 liter four-cylinder with 150 horsepower (111 kilowatts), and 173 pound feet (234 Newton-meters). The six-speed automatic gearbox is now less common in larger vehicles. The new Dodge will compete with the Kia Sportage and the Seat Ateca as well as other competitors.
Mexico’s new SUV will be a boost to the company’s lineup. At the moment, the Dodge Durango is the only model available. It also costs more than $44,000, which is based on current exchange rates. The new Dodge will likely be positioned below the Durango in the Mexican lineup. After the discontinuation of the Journey in 2020, Dodge’s US lineup is lacking in crossovers. Dodge is currently working on a replacement that will share its foundations with the forthcoming Alfa Romeo Tonale.
