It will be available for purchase in the first quarter of next year.
The fifth-generation Subaru WRX all-wheel-drive is here. Today’s debut features a fresh exterior and interior design, paired with a new engine and platform. Although the car appears familiar, Subaru has made many changes to enhance its performance. Subaru will also introduce a GT trim, the top-of-the line GT trim, for 2022.
Subaru increases the 2022 WRX flat-four turbocharged motor from 2.0 to 2.4 liters. The new engine produces 271 horsepower (202 Kilowatts) as well as 258 pound-feet (349 Newton-meters) of torque at 2,000-5,200 RPM. The torque is the same as the fourth-gen model but the new WRX adds three horsepower.
The new engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or the Subaru Performance Transmission (a CVT) that pumps power through Subaru’s AWD system. The CVT features an eight-speed manual mode accessible through the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A cooler for the transmission fluid can also be purchased externally.
Although the new engine may be disappointing for some, the 2022 WRX rides on Subaru Global Platform and brings several improvements. The new chassis is stiffer than ever – an increase of 28 percent in overall torsional rigidity, and a 75 percent increase in suspension mounting points rigidity – which helps lower the car’s center of gravity. Subaru now mounts the rear stabilizer bars to the body, instead of the subframe.
Although the styling of the 2022 WRX could be described as evolutionary, it is completely new. Subaru’s iconic hexagonal grille is now larger than ever with new LED headlights. The model’s broad stance is highlighted by a large, wide hood scoop. The rear also features new taillights that glow like volcanic magma. Subaru also made subtle changes like using aluminum to make the front fenders. This saves five pounds.
The GT trim is new for 2022 (it’s the car in the picture above). Although it is only available with an automatic transmission, it has electronically controlled dampers. You can choose from three settings: Comfort, Normal, or Sport. The new Drive Mode Select gives you 430 customization options. Recaro seats, exclusive to this model, feature an eight-way power driver’s seat wrapped in black Ultrasuede and red contrast stitching. The model also includes 18-inch matte-gray wheels and 245/40 R18 summer performance rubber tires. Non-GT models can choose from either 17-inch or 18-inch alloy options.
The 2022 WRX interior will be a new layout for passengers. The 11.6-inch touchscreen is the infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity are all standard. Harman Kardon’s 11-speaker sound system is also available. Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology will be available on the WRX.
Subaru has not provided pricing information but the 2021 model will start at just over $27,000 Although the price may rise, we don’t anticipate a significant increase. Now that the new WRX is available, it’s time to wait for the WRX STI version. It could debut next summer, according to rumours.
