This truck is a significant step forward in the design process.
Toyota was caught in a quandary earlier this year by a leaked image that showed the Tundra’s exterior styling. Although released an official photo that confirmed the truck’s bold new design, we have not learned much about it. Toyota instead chose to focus on its teaser campaign, which continues today with a clip that announces the truck’s debut date: September 19.
Toyota’s teaser campaign focused on the Tundra TRD Pro model, which will be made available. Toyota teased the truck’s variable drive modes and its leafless rear suspension. Toyota showed us the interior including the infotainment screen, and the truck’s power sliding back window. It looks like the truck will be an improvement on the current-generation pickup’s styling and features.
Toyota teased the engine as well, but details remain elusive. The engine appears to be a V6 unit. However, speculation suggests that it is the twin-turbocharged unit powering the Land Cruiser. It produces 409 horsepower (304 Kilowatts) as well as 479 pound-feet (465 Newton-meters) torque for that application. The Tundra will share its TNGA F platform and 10-speed automatic gearbox. Although the engine is not expected to replace the 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 currently in production, it should be more powerful than the current one.
We won’t have long to ask all the questions we want. Toyota will unveil the 2022 Tundra on Sunday, September 19. Toyota hasn’t yet given an exact time, but the company’s consumer-facing landingpage lists two “Coming Soon” slots to show future teasers. We might get a better look under the hood or see more interior photos. The Tundra follows the Ford F-150 Lightning, and the refreshed Chevy Silverado.
