The pop-top model was originally announced in November last year alongside the standard Ekko’s debut. It took a while for it to make its appearance.
It has been almost 10 months since Winnebago introduced the Ekko. This motorhome is the same size as a camper van but with the capacity and space of a larger RV. It was a huge success. Winnebago cancelled one of the Ekko floorplans (the one without the slide out), and has been slow to show a pop-top version to the public. Winnebago revealed the pop-top model at the Hershey RV Show, Pennsylvania. We won’t be getting the slide out floorplan back.
The pop top Ekko looks exactly the same as the standard model, but has a tilting pop roof roof to provide additional sleeping space for two. It measures 52×79 inches in size and excludes other options such as the luggage rack or exterior kitchen. Only two modifications are made to the interior of the RV: a roof opening and a ladder that can be used to climb up to it. It doubles the sleeping space of an Ekko, which is ideal for families with at least two children. The Ekko is no longer an RV for empty nesters or DINKs. It can be enjoyed by families with at least one child.
It offers a lot. The Ekko is based on the Ford Transit platform. It features all-wheel drive, true four-season capability, and insulation. There’s also a heated garage and 50-gallon gray and fresh water tanks. Ford’s proven twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine produces 310 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds torque. It’s paired with an efficient 10-speed automatic transmission to get it to the ground.
The Ekko’s most striking feature is the disappearing shower. Winnebago designers had to think outside the box to create a fully dry bath. They looked to Europe to find inspiration. A clever hinged wall system allows you to have a large bathroom to wash your clothes and then quickly transforms into a large shower.
The pop-top version is back. Winnebago did not provide pricing information. The Ekko’s cost is still listed on the company’s website at $171,845 without any options. A pop-top option links buyers to their dealer for additional pricing information.
