The question is, when is it coming?
As a last chance for Godzilla, Nissan unveiled the GTR T-Spec earlier this month. It remains to be seen if the supercar’s current generation will get a mild-hybrid setup or a stronger Final Edition, before it is retired in the next few years. What happens after that? Of course, the R36.
The managing director of Nissan Australia’s regional division Adam Paterson stated that the performance machine will be retiring Down Under in a press release. It is not the end of the GT-R story here in Australia, however.
Although his statement may have led some to believe that the R35 could not be updated to comply with stricter legislation, Adam Paterson continued to mention that the 2022 GT-R would “mark the closing of this chapter for this generation vehicle.” As if this wasn’t enough, he spoke about the T-Spec special editions and Nismo SV being the “last time the current-generation vehicle is offered in Australia.”
Although this is not a confirmation of the R36-gen model, it’s still the best thing. Everyone is wondering when Nissan will finally unveil the GT-R. The question of how “new” this next-generation model will be is also a concern. Some reports suggest it will ride on an updated platform. This is the same strategy that the Japanese brand used for its other sports car, 2023 Z.
The mild-hybrid configuration we spoke of earlier could actually be used for the R36. It will likely retain the twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V6 and be more efficient to comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations. It is possible that the R36 will not be available for some time as logic suggests that Nissan will first unveil a concept similar to what it did with the Z Proto.
The R35, introduced in 2007 (yes it is 14 years old) was created after the 2001 GT-R, and 2005 GT-R Proto Concepts.
