General Motors is adding salt to the wound.
The “generalmotorsdesign” page on Instagram is home to some exciting official renderings, some purely conceptual and others based on actual products GM is selling. The most recent design exercise is somewhere in the middle. While it’s not over-the-top, it’s still not a production vehicle.
It is what? It’s a Camaro. It’s not one of the spicy Chevy derivatives. It’s an aggressive track-oriented muscle car with a massive vented (and likely carbon fiber) hood and air intakes. Unfortunately, it only exists online. It could be the Z/28, an allegedly canned car. Maybe.
Although it is possible to speculate that the Z/28 is still alive, GM has not revealed any information about this menacing Camaro. Its carbon roof and massive rear wing make it easy for us to guess. The rendering looks like something you would find in an official photo gallery next to photos of an actual vehicle, as is usually the case with debut vehicles.
Rumours about the Camaro Z/28 being axed have been circulated since July 2019. We are not aware of any such rumors. According to the latest gossip, the Camaro Z/28 would have used a pushrod V8 6.6-liter with more than 500 horsepower and a speed of 7,000 rpm.
The LT3 is a naturally aspirated engine that would have been complemented with weight-saving measures to increase the power-toweight ratio. Muscle Cars believed the Z/28 would have lower noise insulation, thinner glass and no rear seats. To create a Camaro that is truly hardcore, the draconian diet may have removed air conditioning and sound system. Only purists could appreciate these creature comforts and learn to live without them.
Although it is disappointing that the Z/28 will not happen, Chevy can be blamed since the business case for the Z/28 seems weak due to declining sales. Deliveries dropped by 38.3 per cent in 2020, compared to the previous year. Customers received only 29,775 units. A new juicy rumor relates to a ZL1 with the silver lining. Cadillac CT5V Blackwing supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Camaro’s final hurrah.
It is expected to arrive in 2023MY. The package will include other goodies from the high performance luxury sedan, which has a two-year life span. It is unknown how powerful it will be, but the engine produces 668 horsepower (498 kW) in the CT5V Blackwing.
