It has nothing to do the first-gen model.
Stellantis revives the Dodge Journey moniker to make way for a completely new SUV. The original midsize vehicle was built on the GS platform, which was co-developed by Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler. However, the 2022 Journey is based upon a compact SUV from China, specifically the Trumpchi GS5.
The new Dodge Journey, originally teased at beginning of the month has entered production in China under a tie up between Stellantis Motors and Trumpchi’s parent firm GAC Group. Initial deliveries of SUVs will be to Mexico, where the first-generation Journey was manufactured. It could eventually expand to other Latin American countries, including Peru, Chile and Colombia.
Although technical specifications are not yet available, local reports indicate that the Journey will come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline motor. The engine can produce up to 166 horsepower, and 188 pound-feet torque through a six speed automatic transmission. It uses a MacPherson front suspension with a multi-link rear.
Mexico sales are expected to begin in November. Prices have not yet been released for Mexico, where Dodge sells another rebadged vehicle, the Attitude, which is modeled after the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 small sedan.
We don’t know anything about the Journey’s return home to the United States, where it could come back under a new name. According to rumours, a Dodge Hornet will be coming as a sister model to the Alfa Romeo Tonale compact crossover. It will feature a 2.0-liter plug in hybrid engine. Stellantis already confirmed a Dodge PHEV’s 2022 launch in a product roadmap.
