Popular Corvette C8 Option Available Again After Year-Long Absence

However, it is not available in the online configurator.

Although the mid-engine Chevy corvette has been a huge success since its launch, the production process has not been easy. After a long UAW strike against GM delayed production starting in 2019, the coronavirus swept in to disrupt not only the automotive industry, but the entire global economy. Only half of the 40,000 Corvettes that were originally planned for 2020 were actually built.

Another production problem, although small potatoes in comparison to everything else, was the loss of the Carbon Fiber Ground Effects option. This was almost a whole year ago when we reported. To the day, with a Chevrolet Representative told us that the $4,850 option was not available due to supplier constraints. This happened just as COVID-19 was spreading, but we didn’t know if the supplier issues were related to the pandemic.

The good news is that the ground protection package is now available again, and it is slightly cheaper. The option is not available in Corvette’s online configurator.

The Chevrolet Accessories website sells the kit for $4,695. You will receive two side rocker panel moldings, a front splitter and all necessary hardware. This kit is compatible with all C8 Corvettes.

The down side? The downside? We reached out to Chevrolet to inquire if the kit would be returned to the C8 configurator at some point. If we get a reply, we will update this article.

Although 2021 Corvette production began late in 2020, delays remain a reality for eager C8 buyers who are waiting to place their orders. Unspecified delays in the supply chain have caused the Corvette assembly plant to be shut down for one week as of this article’s posting on February 1,. Production is expected to resume on February 8, barring any additional issues.
