Bugatti Battle: Veyron Drag Racing A Chiron for Hypercar Crown

They are very different.

When it was launched for 2006, the Bugatti Véyron set new standards for hypercars. The car was the fastest and most powerful ever built, with nearly 1,000 horsepower from its quad-turbocharged W16 engine. However, that was 15 years ago and Bugatti is much more adept at building high-powered machines. In 2016, the Veyron was joined by the Chiron, and a new video shows the two competing in drag racing.

The race was held at a 1-mile airstrip giving each car plenty of space to reach triple-digit speeds. The Veyron produces 987 horsepower (736 kW), and the Chiron 1,479 horsepower (1,103 kW). It’s easy to see the power difference on the asphalt, as it shows how much can happen in a decade.

Both cars rocket off the line but the Chiron is faster, pulling away from Veyron and going faster and schneller. The Veyron was able to reach speeds of 190 mph (305 km/h) before the driver started to pedal on the brakes. As the Veyron was still pulling away at the end, the Chiron probably reached 200 mph (321 kph). With a huge rooster tail full of dust trailing it, the Chiron got smaller and smaller in front of the Veyron.

Although the Veyron was an engineering marvel, the Chiron is miles ahead. Bugatti is working towards making electric vehicles do the same as the Chiron. Bugatti and Porsche joined forces to create a Bugatti-Rimac venture. However, jointly developed cars (including EVs) will be available later. The Chiron and its powerful variants will be the only vehicles available until then. Although it’s a powerful hypercar we are eager to see what the future holds for the company.
