Retired Double-Decker Bus Has Second Life as Epic Two-Story Home

This tiny house isn’t too small.

All manner of vehicles have been converted into motorhomes. While some are intended for occasional getaways while others are permanent homes, this double-decker bus is our first experience with a mini-home. It can be moved around, even though it is stationary at the moment.

Charlie MacVicar and Luke Walker created this amazing bus. After many adventures and travels, the couple decided to call the UK their home. MyJournal.com says they didn’t want to spend their money on expensive rentals or get locked into big mortgages. So they came up with some creative solutions.

This endeavor is about thinking outside of the box. However, given the shape and size of the double-decker it’s all about being within the box. They set their sights on a Volvo bus that was in excellent condition for $3,500.

This bus looks just like a London double-decker, save for the country setting and large stovepipe out its back. You’ll find all the comforts and conveniences of a home when you step inside. On the first floor, you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen and dining table. A front-load washer is cleverly placed in the kitchen to provide counter space while washing clothes. You’ll find the wood-burning stove in the far end of your bus. The whole floor is open, making it seem larger than it actually is. There is a half-bathroom in the middle with a sink and toilet.

It is only a half-bathroom. The couple has a large bedroom upstairs that houses a full-size tub. The bedroom occupies the entire top floor. It includes custom-made furniture that can be adjusted to accommodate the unique design requirements of the bus. The floors and walls were all repainted to create a neutral, bright atmosphere. Although the large number of windows adds to the feeling of openness, it comes at a price. Because the bus does not have insulation, it can become warm or cold depending on the season.

The bus’s power source is the standard power grid. It is located on Essex land. This home-on-wheels is also connected to water and natural gas. This means that Charlie and Luke can’t just jump behind the wheel to go on a trip, but they have the option of making the bus roadworthy in case they get the travel bug again.

This couple also shares their daily van bus life through an Instagram account that is dedicated to their home. Although it was a lot of work, the home isn’t accompanied by a large mortgage or rent payments. It’s hard to fault that.
