Mercedes G-Wagen for Military Use Announced with More Power and Torque

It replaces the G-Class W461 in non-civilian usage.

You probably already know that the large, boxy SUV from Mercedes G-Class was originally designed as a military vehicle.

Although it is now a luxury civilian SUV model, many countries still use a military-spec GWagen for uniformed personnel. This G-Class coded W461 was in production since 1992.

Mercedes-Benz is about to change that as it announces the arrival of a G-Wagen, a military-spec G-Wagen, for Europe.

According to Australia’s What Car, Australia’s new ‘Special Ops’ G-Class is equipped with the W464 series. This is only available to government agencies and military “for rescue or special operations.” The publication did confirm that the W461 would still be made.

The details are not yet available, but it is announced that the G-Class W464 G350d non-civilian will offer more off-road capability and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel straight-6.

According to the new W464, it produces 245 horsepower (183 Kilowatts) as well as 443 pound-feet (6600 Newton-meters), of torque. This is a 35% increase in output and a massive 50% improvement in torque. The eight-speed automatic transmission sends these numbers to the wheels. The vehicle also features a better fuel economy and a 24-volt electric system. Payload has been increased, and modern touches like LED headlights or DRLs have been included.

The more civilized G Class W463 gets a new Pro Line exterior trim, as announced at the recent IAA Munich. The Professional Line includes additional equipment and features for off-roading.

The Mercedes EQG Concept was also introduced in Munich. This is an all-electric, near-production version of the G-Wagen. Mercedes has not yet provided details about the powertrain and the timeframe for the EQG’s arrival. However, it is expected that a few modifications will be made to the design department.
