In the first half 2022, the rotary engine will be available.
Mazda has been busy working on major product enhancements that will be completed in the next two-years. The world premiere of CX-50 will kick off next month. It will not replace the CX-5 which was updated recently for the 2022 North American model year.
The CX-50, the first ever CX-50, will be able to ride on the same platform with the smaller CX-30 or the Mazda3, and all-wheel drive. The joint effort of Mazda and Toyota will see it go into production at the new Huntsville, Alabama factory in January 2022. The CX-50, unlike all other SUVs that we’ll be discussing in the future, will remain exclusive to the United States.
The CX-90 will follow with three-row seating, and the CX-70 will have two rows. These models will have wider bodies than the CX-90, Mazda claims, which makes them more suitable for North American roads. However, they will also be available in other markets. These two SUVs, which are large and heavy, will officially inaugurate the rear wheel-drive platform that we have been hearing about for years. They will be available in the US with turbocharged straight six gasoline engines or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The CX-90 in the USA will replace the CX-9.
CX-60 (two rows) or CX-80 (3 rows) narrower SUVs are now available in Europe, Japan, and other countries. SkyactivX and SkyactivD straight-six gasoline- and diesel engines, as well as a four-cylinder mill for a plug-in hybrid setup, will also be coming to the Old Continent. Mazda plans to sell larger engines in Europe with mild-hybrid technology. Mazda will sell its larger SUVs in Japan with a straight six diesel engine with mild-hybrid technology, as well as a diesel-electric hybrid.
Mazda has confirmed that the MX-30 will receive a range-extending, rotary engine by the end of 2022.
