The deadline will be formalized by the country’s industry ministry soon.
The mechanism to combat the effects of climate changes isn’t slowing down. The automobile industry is not letting up on the problem. They are trying to find ways to reverse it, mainly by selling hybrid and electric vehicles.
Japan is the latest country that has announced a deadline for imposing a ban on the sale of new gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles. This information was provided by NHK the country’s public broadcaster and reported in a report from Reuters.
According to the report Japan has set the mid-2030s as the deadline. It expects automakers to adhere by not selling any new fossil fuel-powered cars by that time. It is important to remember that Yoshihide Sug, the Prime Minister of Japan, has promised in October that Japan will have net zero emissions by 2050.
The Land of the Rising Sun joins the list of countries that have already set a deadline. This was announced by Norway, Britain, and Germany, along with certain parts of the United States, Canada, and Norway.
This is why hybrid and electric cars are so popular. This is the future. They know this and will switch to electrified cars in order to be future-proof.
Japan’s new deadline will however put pressure on domestic automakers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan to accelerate the R&D timeline in order to electrify. We have seen several new Japanese models this year, including the Nissan Ariya hybrid crossover. So expect more.
NHK reports Japan’s industry ministry will likely set a target date for the sales ban before the year ends.
