The order books are now closed.
According to Motor.es, production of the AMG GT Coupe will cease in December. This is not surprising considering the fact that the Black Series version will be discontinued in December. Mercedes has decided to retire this fast coupe, which was the sixth high-performance vehicle to receive the Black Series treatment. It debuted in July 2020.
According to the Spanish magazine, the three-pointed star has stopped taking orders for the coupe because all of the cars that will be made between now and the end the year are in a backlog. The same applies to the convertible, which will be retired in December. Mercedes will replace it with an all new, AMG-developed SL in coming weeks. It could even be introduced as early as November.
One question is: Will there be another coupe. Mercedes released a video a few years back showing Lewis Hamilton, seven-time F1 champion, visiting the Sindelfingen design center, Germany. He was able to see a clay model of a sports coupe . The media quickly speculated about the clay model, which was an early glimpse at the next-gen AMG GT. We even created our own rendering.
There will likely be a new coupe that complements the SL roadster. It would be more economical to have two models than one convertible, and it would also make financial sense. This is especially true considering that AMG is responsible for the redesign of the Sport Leicht. Therefore, launching a convertible seems illogical.
We have not seen spy shots of the new coupe so it is unlikely that a second-generation model will be on the market before the second half 2023. A recent Mercedes report claims that it is reducing its two-door offering by merging the C/Class Coupe / Convertible with the E-Class Coupe / Convertible to create the CLE.
