Acura customers in Brazil received an official letter.
Acura has been receiving decent demand in America for its new Integra 2023, but things are not going according to plan in China. The People’s Republic has established a joint venture between the Japanese premium brand and GAC. However, operations at the company will be drastically reduced starting in 2023. Although no official announcement is available at the moment, Acura customers in Japan were sent a letter.
CarNewsChina reports GAC Acura is closing down operations. Both sales and production of current products will be canceled. However, the report suggests that the automaker may eventually introduce new products to China’s market, particularly if new electrified models launch. However, it is not possible to give an exact timeframe.
Acura was first launched in China in 2016. In 2019, 14,701 Acura cars were delivered to customers. Only 6,554 Acura cars were sold in China last year from the brand’s two-model lineup. The only Acuras currently available in the country are the CDX SUVs and RDX SUVs. Both have been outsold by the German premium brands.
Honda offered the new NSX with Acura badge for a short time, but sales were very low. Also, the TLX-L sedan that was made in China didn’t do well on the market. It was eventually discontinued just a few short years after it was launched. However, things could change once the first electrified or electric Acura models are available.
GAC Acura employees are now part of the GAC Honda family. They will continue to work on the Japanese company’s growth. The company will also continue to provide maintenance services for Acura owners. Honda currently only has the e.NS1 electric vehicle available in China. However, it is still having trouble finding enough customers. At least not yet, the Honda e isn’t available in China.
