The plug-in hybrid can produce more than 700 horsepower.
Although the fuzzy dice have long since passed, the Mercedes AMG S63e test car hasn’t lost any of its camouflage. The large hybrid sedan was first seen with a camouflage wrap around its body. Later spy shots revealed that the model had quickly removed any coverings and only concealed the AMG-specific parts. Our friends at motor.es have taken the latest spy photos showing the S63e hiding its rear and front fascias.
The S63e (name unknown yet) cannot hide AMG’s Panamericana Grille, lower ride height and larger air vents. It is difficult to conceal the quad exhaust and larger brakes. These will be the most prominent exterior design changes over the standard S-Class. However, the bumper will get tweaked styling. These spy shots do not show the dual rear fender caps that hold the hybrid plug and gas.
The powertrain of the sedan is still unknown, just like its name. According to the latest reports, Mercedes will pair a twin-turbocharged V8 and an electric motor. Although the combined output of both engines is expected to exceed 700 horsepower (514 megawatts), there are rumors that a hotter variant could produce 800 horsepower (588 kW). It could be called the S73e and make a great successor to the S65. The sedan’s all-wheel drive system will be powered by an automatic gearbox.
Mercedes is yet to announce when the AMG S63e will be revealed, but the car looks ready for production. The model should be available in time for the 2022 model-year, although new car production is still struggling due to the continuing chip shortage. AMG S63e will feature all of the company’s latest features and amenities. The S Class, which is more popular, will be available for purchase sometime next year.
