Each year, the American University Kogod School of Business makes an index that calculates the proportion of American-made parts in the cars. The Ford Mustang GT GT with a manual transmission is the top-scoring vehicle with an 88.5 percent score for the 2021 list.
The Kogod School of Business does not only consider where the parts are from to calculate these scores. It considers where the final assembly takes place, where the engine and transmission are produced, as well as whether the headquarters of the automaker is located in the US.
For example, 77% of Mustang GT’s parts are from the USA or Canada. Kogod’s other factors make up the 88.5 percent score. Below is a table showing the top five vehicles in 2021.

Tesla, with 81 percent of its average domestic content, is the best example of how things work in terms manufacturers. General Motors and Ford were also well ranked with an average of more than 70 percent.
The Ford Ranger was the top-ranked vehicle last year, but it dropped to 16th in 2021. This was due to a drop in domestic content in trucked at 45 percent compared to 70 percent in 2020.
The Chevrolet Camaro equipped with an automatic transmission was second in 2020. It fell to seventh this year. The total domestic content increased from 83 percent in 2020, to 78.5 percent by 2021.
