All of it makes sense now.
Why is the BMW 2 Series Coupe so different? Why not ask Jose Casas, the BMW 2 Series’s designer? This interview with BMW Blog gives us the rare opportunity to learn about the 2 Series’s design from the man who created it. Let’s find out how the new BMW 2 Series was created.
The most controversial question in modern BMW design is the large kidney grilles on the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series. Casas explained that the BMW 2 Series has a smaller car, so the larger grilles don’t fit the style of the 2 Series. The team chose to use the more traditional BMW grille design specifications. These smaller grilles match well with the 2 Series’s front lights which have the same shape and give the car a cohesive design.
Two elements are what make the BMW M240i unique. The M240i’s base car has a sporty, expressive design. This meant that the team had to work hard to distinguish it from the M240i. The M240i was designed to feel smaller and more compact.
The BMW M240i Coupe measures only 6.7 inches shorter than the BMW 3 Series sedan, and is 0.5 inches wider. This emphasizes that a compact design can be difficult to achieve. The BMW 2 Series coupe is an enthusiast car that BMW offers to customers who are looking for a small BMW that is driver-focused. This philosophy guides the design process to create a compact, sporty car that is still a BMW M car.
