Ferrari 488 Driver Dies in Car Accident During Tail of the Dragon Cruise

Except for a severely bruised ego, there were no injuries.

This tale of supercar destruction will be started with some friendly words. The Idiots at The Dragon Facebook page where this story was first posted, said that there were no injuries in the Ferrari accident. We don’t know all the details of the crash so it’s possible that this isn’t an example of supercar drivers exceeding their skill on public roads. It’s unlikely.

The crash happened on more than one road. The Tail of the Dragon is a twisting two-lane highway that runs through the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. It’s a popular destination for driving enthusiasts all over the globe. Individuals and groups alike flock to the Dragon’s 318 curves within 11 miles. Many times, they exceed the speed limit of 30 mph. You can find it a very attractive automotive playground, but sometimes drivers do go a little too far.

This brings us back to the Ferrari. It sure looks like a 488 Pista Spider. Gravity Cavity MM3 is the site of an infamous hump on the road. According to To Drive, the car was heading south when it allegedly struck this hump too quickly. The driver lost control and crashed into a steep grassy cliff at the side of the road, flipping over. The car finally stopped in the opposite direction. It was fortunate that there were no vehicles going northbound at the moment.

It is possible that the driver was driving with other exotic cars at a rally. The Ferrari is shown in photos posted to the Idiots Facebook page and in comments with supercars including a rare and highly valuable Porsche 918 Spyder. This Ferrari is likely to be total loss due to the fact that there isn’t much roof left, as well as the damage to the front clip from the crash with the cliff.

It is not known what the state of the engine was as it is reported that it was running at the time the car was put to sleep. It is generally not a good idea to run an internal combustion engine upside down unless you are in a P-51 Mustang.

The fall season in northern hemisphere is a beautiful time to cruise. What’s beautiful, you ask? Rolling your car on one of these cruises. Don’t be tempted to go over the limit on public roads. Just enjoy the view. Everyone, be safe.
