It’s a race between an X5 and a bullet.
How often do your eyes see an advertisement for an armored vehicle? It’s unlikely that most people will come across it. BMW has released a new advertisement for its BMW X5 protection VR6.
The X5 Protection VR6 is featured in the 75 second spot. It accelerates along a dirt trail, before reaching paved roads. As a gunshot sounds out, it speeds up. The race is between an armored X5 bullet and a bullet.
The BMW will not win this race. Protection VR6 is capable of handling impacts from the 7.62-millimeter round AK-47. This weapon spits lead at a muzzle velocity just under 1,600 miles an hour, which is 715 meters per second. The electronically limited top speed for this armored SUV is 131 mph. It is a close race.
The X5 does not have to beat the unidentified bullet. The VIP is seated in the Protection VR6’s 2nd row. After performing some maneuvers, the driver turns his back to face the bullet. BMW does not show the impact of the computer-generated round hitting the X5, however, the aftermath is as clear as the bullet that bounces harmlessly to ground.
The X5 ProtectionVR6 is a refresher for those who need it. It started life as an HTML5 M50i. It packs a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-lifter V8 that produces 523 horsepower and 553 pounds-feet. The Protection’s VR6 name refers to its level of armor. It can also withstand a blast from close by (just 13 feet away) with 33 pounds of TNT. The X5 Protection’s handling is clearly visible in the ad. However, the extra weight has only a slight impact on straight-line performance. The armored SUV can still sprint from 0 to 62 in 5.9 seconds. This is 1.6 seconds faster than the standard M50i.
