It is about three seconds faster than the M8 competition.
As heavyweight luxobarges and lightweight performance cars no longer lap the Nurburgring, the days of lightweight racing cars are gone. BMW’s most powerful production vehicle is 1,825 kg (4,023 lbs), but it still manages to run a fast lap of the difficult German race track.
Christian Gebhardt, Sport Auto’s test driver, took the M5 CS to the Nordschleife and completed the lap in just 7 minutes and 29.57 seconds. What does this time compare to other Bavaria performance machines? It was faster than the M5 Competition (7.35.90) It also lapped the Ring faster than the M8 Competition (7.32.79). We’re not talking about the driver of all three cars.
Christian Gebhardt has been a driver of several BMWs at the Nurburgring over the years. These include the CS (7.42.99) and the M2 Competition (7.52.36). This video contains some great parts, especially at 4:24. He seems to be moving a bit faster than suggested.
Jump to 6:28 to see the glovebox opening. This is likely due to the wiring of the dashcam/measurement device. The M5 CS is traveling at 137 mph (220 km/h) and the driver decides that he will close the glovebox to stop the document from flying around the cabin, which could potentially cause him to lose his time. We can see the super sedan speeding up to 300 km/h (186 miles per hour) starting at 8:00.
Pirelli P Zero Corsa Pirelli tires were used for the high-speed run, which is standard on the M5 CS. For the 20-inch forged wheels in gold bronze, the rubber measures 275/35 R20 at front and 285/35 R20 back.
It is worth noting that the Mercedes-AMG GT63S is still faster, regardless of whether we are talking about the 12.8-mile (20.6-kilometers) layout at the Nurburgring or its longer 12.94-mile (20.83-kilometers) layout. This is not an accurate comparison, as we are talking about two different drivers. Demian Schaffert, AMG development engineer, lapped the track in 7 minutes 23.009 and 7 minutes 27.800 respectively.
Although the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 wins them all is a great choice, some argue that its record doesn’t count technically since it was run with an optional two-seat configuration only available in select markets.
