It will not be a full hybrid or an EV, as that would increase its weight.
After rumors that Mazda would install a hybrid powertrain on the next MX-5, a representative from the company confirmed this in an e mail sent to Motor1.com. This was in response to the rumours. Zoom-Zoom did not specify to what extent the NE-generation sports cars would receive an electric boost. However, Autocaris now apparently able to unlock some of these secrets.
According to reports, the fifth-gen Miata will switch to a SkyActivX engine. This is a four-banger unit with a small turbocharger that pushes air into the cylinder. The gasoline mill is able to benefit from spark-controlled compression ignition, which produces better performance and less emissions. To reduce fuel consumption and comply with stricter regulations, a 48V mild hybrid system is also on the horizon.
Mazda claims that the SkyActivX 2.0-liter SkyActivX produces up to 30% more torque than its SkyActiv-G 2.0 counterpart, while reducing fuel consumption by up to 30%. The Japanese automaker has a page dedicated to the new engine that explains how the powertrain was designed for real-world efficiency and not just to pass government tests.
SkyActiv-X has been installed in several models, including the Mazda3 & CX-3. It “pulls like an turbodiesel, while revving like a normally-aspirated gasoline engine.” The MX-5 will likely get the 2.0-liter engine. Autocar doubts the availability of the 1.5-liter unit in the future. The 2.0-liter SkyActiv-X could replace the MX-5 as the sole powertrain. However, it is available in multiple tunings.
Mazda has made every effort to reduce the vehicle’s weight. The MX-5 will not be a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The Miata is the most popular vehicle in this class, and the addition of batteries would make it heavier and less enjoyable to drive.
The report mentions that the MX-5 will have a new front grille and angular LED lights, without looking too aggressive. The interior of the small sports car will feature fancier materials, a digital cluster for the instruments, and modern controls that are similar to other Mazda products.
It is anticipated that the NE-generation Miata will arrive sometime in 2024.
