Although the 1969 Land Rover Range Rover is generally considered the first luxury SUV in the world, others would argue that the Jeep Super Wagoneer which was released three years earlier holds this title. The fourth generation of this full-size sport utility vehicle has been in production for nearly a decade. It will be replaced by the new model, which will take on the latest Lexus LX.
Since the Range Rover Mk5 was first revealed, we have been watching it closely for almost two years. All prototypes give us the impression that the exterior will not be too different in design. We’ll have to wait and watch to see if the juicy rumors of a BMW motor powering the new Range Rover materialize. This includes Bavaria’s ubiquitous twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V8 that is found in many M models. Land Rover will electrify its SUV flagship from the beginning with a plug-in hybrid model. Reports speculate that there may be an electric version later on.
The exterior of the 2022 Range Rover will likely be the same as the current model, but the interior will most likely be completely different. It will be based on the MLA architecture. This was originally supposed to be the debut of the next-generation Jaguar XJ, but the large luxurious sedan was axed just before it was officially launched.
On camera, prototypes were captured showing a rear-wheel steering system in action. This should result in a tighter turning circle as well as increased stability when cornering at high speeds. Land Rover will be installing its Pivi Pro infotainment system inside, which supports over-the-air updates and a digital instrument cluster. There will also be more screens in the rear part of the rear-seat entertainment screen.
The new Range Rover will be available for purchase shortly after today’s launch. It should hit the streets in 2022’s first half. It is likely that Land Rover will soon introduce the smaller, more agile Range Rover Sport. The spy shots were taken back in February 2020. Therefore, the debut could be at the end of next or early 2023.
