Toyota invites prospective GR86 buyers to test drive the wrong car

Toyota faces the Subaru BRZ head-to-head

Everyone knows that the Toyota GR86 is twin brother to the Subaru BRZ. You’ll notice slight differences in their trim and, naturally, different badges. Both cars share the same engine and the same bones so they drive the exact same. Or are they?

Although the Toyota-Subaru partnership seems friendly, each company would prefer that you purchase their sports car. To convince Japanese buyers that Toyota is the best driver’s car, the company has made it available for them to test drive both the new GR86 and the GR86. The invitation also allows people to go to Japan’s famous Fuji Speedway for an Fuji 86 style event, where they can compare the cars on the famous track. Toyota, you are bold.

Although the GR86 is very similar to the BRZ, Toyota claims that its development team was focused on delivering the “unique driving experience of a GR car, with intuitive handling, instinctive responsiveness and linear response, as well as outstanding agility at the highest limits of performance.” Toyota hasn’t shared details about the BRZ but did mention that custom GR parts are available to owners for personalizing their GR86. This refers to accessories after-sales and not the factory’s enhanced handling.

Subaru will be attending this event, and is actually a co-sponsor. We don’t expect any significant differences in the models. The GR86 and BRZ both use a 2.4-liter flat four for power. It generates 228 horsepower (170 kilowatts), for the rear wheels to move. The six-speed manual transmission or the automatic transmission are used to shift. Both cars have a stiffer structure with a lower center of gravity.

Fuji-86 Style will be held at Fuji Speedway on November 21. The cost per person is 2,500 Yen. This is equivalent to $22 USD.
