These off-road adventure vehicles are rare and retro.
As we write this article, the 2021 SEMA Show is in Las Vegas. While custom cars are the most prominent focus, there is no doubt that off-road projects were a big part of this year’s event. The popularity of overlanding has increased in recent years, and this is evident by the many overland builds that were built by both automakers as well as independent shops.
We were able to find some of the most memorable overland vehicles that graced Las Vegas in this year’s edition with a little help from Kahn Media. We’re sure you’ve seen some of these projects before, but we think you’ll be interested in the rest, especially if your favorite classics are among them.
Toyota Tacoma “Tacozilla”
Tacozilla, a Las Vegas-based manufacturer-made overlanding vehicle, is easily the most popular. We’ve already written about but it’s worth mentioning here as one the best at the show. It has a full kitchen, bathroom and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Unfortunately, this is a one-off project.
Toyota Land Cruiser Banderiante FJ45 Crew Cab
The FJ-45s are always loved, but it’s rare to find a Bandeirante crew car. This is an overlanding build that’s relatively simple with 35-inch tires and upgraded suspension. The standard overlanding gear includes a bed rack and a tent roof, but this off-road trailer gives it a little more power.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ75 Troopy
This FJ-75 is more Land Cruiser classic, but it doesn’t have a tent roof. The FJ-75 rides on a modified suspension with similar tires to the FJ-45. However, it has a pop-top conversion which allows for enough space to stand up in its back. It is compact and classic, but it’s also ready for off-grid fun.
Toyota 4Runner by Overland Expo
Toyota is the best overlanding project vehicle on our list. This 4Runner is a standout for a few reasons. An upgraded suspension with 33-inch tires makes it possible to clear obstacles. Moreover, anything that is facing such a large front bumper will run for its lives. You can purchase this rig through BringATrailer and all proceeds will go to charity.
EarthRoamer LiTi
The EarthRoamers are impressive in every way, but this latest model makes them seem smaller. The cab’s custom camper is made of vacuum-formed carbon fibre, which cuts 1,500 pounds off the weight of earlier models. It can also carry 95 gallons diesel fuel and 1,320 watts solar. It’s never been easier to enjoy extended off-grid holidays in remote areas.
Ford F-150 Raptor Prelander
It’s simple to put a tent and a bed rack on a Raptor. Then, turn on some lights and voila! Insta-user Tacodust has swapped in an upgraded long-travel suspension for a Prelander to enhance the truck’s off-road performance. Be careful not to go too fast as you could damage the fridge in the bed.
Lance Camper Enduro “Adventure Pass”, Overland Camper with VW Atlas
This cool trailerfrom Lance Camper was spotted a few days ago. But it deserves another mention in this list. This trailer, which is technically a prototype, can accommodate six people and has an outdoor kitchen and bathroom. Lance Camper designed a sturdy Volkswagen Atlas trailer to demonstrate its ease-of-towing nature.
1964 Jeep M677
We saved the best for last. This Jeep is a rare example. Only 500 were made. This rig was modified extensively, including the leaf springs. The 5.7-liter Chevrolet V8 engine that powers the rig’s 37-inch tires is found under its wheels. Although there might be a tent at the back, we prefer to sleep on the ground so that we can wake up early and see the rig.
