2022 Mazda CX-50 Teaser Announces November 15, Debut

The CX-5 is getting a bigger brother.

Although Mazda is a small manufacturer of cars, it wants to be able to compete with domestic rivals like Honda and Toyota. The Japanese brand has added the MX-30 electric model to its lineup. Now, it is planning to launch five CX models worldwide. Here’s a teaser: the CX-50.

The CX-60 to CX-90 will be able to ride on a rear-wheel-drive platform that features inline-six engines, PHEV power and an inline-six engine. However, the CX-50 will offer a more spacious alternative to the CX-5. The CX-50 will be built using the same Mazda CX-30 formula. It is a larger CX-3 that can be used for extra practicality. While the CX-30 is available worldwide, the CX-50 will only be available in North America.

The CX-50 appears in a teaser video, driving through a rainforest with a kayak before its official debut on November 15. The video does not show the SUV in action, and is intended to announce when it will be available. Mazda Canada also released the short clip, which strongly suggests that the model will be available in Canada, the second-largest country in terms of total area.

The new CX-50, which will be built in Huntsville, Alabama, as a joint venture between Toyota and CX-3, will ride on the same platform that the Mazda3 and CX-3. The new crossover, unlike the larger RWD SUVs planned by the company, will use FWD underpinnings with AWD as well as a turbocharged 2.5-liter gasoline motor. It produces 250 horsepower and 320 pound feet (434 Newton-meters), when it is fed on 93-octane gasoline.

The CX-5 is not expected to be significantly more expensive than its smaller cousin, the CX-30 which is $1,260 less than the CX-3. Mazda already confirmed that the CX-5 would remain in the lineup, and has given it a makeover for the 2022 model-year. All CX-badged models from the future will feature AWD, as standard.
