The Niva is still alive and well.
The Lada Niva has seen significant improvements in the past few years. There are now two model lines. The Nivatravel, a more civilized and economical small SUV, is based on the Chevrolet Niva manufactured between 2003 and 2020. There’s also the Niva legend, which is an updated version of the classic Niva offroader. Is this crossover worthy of its title?
Carwow took the Niva Legend to the test drive for the 2021 model-year. Their YouTube video is a long 17-minute review on a car that you won’t see soon. Mat Watson, the channel’s host admits that he has always wanted to drive the Niva Legend. It costs only PS17,500, or $23,400 at current exchange rates.
The design of the Niva Legend is contradictory. It’s a very outdated design in every way. It does have some trends though, such as the reversed front design with indicators above the headlights and a hatchback shape that is reminiscent of many modern crossovers. Keep in mind that the Niva legend was originally launched in 1977 as the Lada Niva.
There are large windows and robust bumpers. An actual exhaust pipe is used instead of a chrome trim. The cabin is the same. Although the materials may seem cheap, the car in the video has heated front seats and electric windows. It also has air conditioning. What else do you want in an off-roader with no frills?
The Niva Legend’s 1.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline motor produces 83 horsepower (62 megawatts). Through a five-speed manual transmission, the power is delivered to all four wheels. Carwow even tested the car at the quarter-mile mark. The crossover is small enough to cover the distance in… yes.
