According to a new report, BMW plans to offer two plug-in hybrid versions (G30) of its upcoming 5 Series.
BMWBLOG has uncovered some details about BMW’s plans for hybridizing the next 5 Series. It appears that there will be two models. They will share the same hardware setup as the 330e but with more power to compensate for the larger car’s extra weight.
Update:
The will be a combination of a turbocharged four cylinder engine and an electric motor, generating a combined output around 280 horsepower. According to the same source, this version will reach speeds of 75 miles an hour (120 km/h) in electric mode. BMW is expected to sell the vehicle with a standard RWD arrangement and an optional xDrive arrangement.
The beefier 540e will be equipped with a TwinPower turbo four cylinder gasoline engine. It features VANOS control double overhead camshaft, VALVETRONIC control valve control and high precision injection. The engine will produce 258 horsepower and the electric motor, which produces 95 horsepower, together make up 326 horsepower.
The 540e will offer a 19-mile electric range and a 75 mph top speed when in electric mode. The 540e will be equipped with a nine speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels, or to an optional xDrive configuration. A battery pack under the rear seats will power the water-cooled electric motor.
Both 530e and 540e plug-in hybrids are set to come out next year, following the release of the conventionally-powered 5 Series (G30) this October in Paris.
