This timeline has been slightly modified, but it is still happening.
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 has been delayed. The full-electric crossover was originally planned to be available in California and other zero emission vehicle (ZEV), states by the end this year. The full launch of the VW 650 dealerships across 50 U.S. States was planned for the first half 2021. Automotive News reports however that the timeline has been slightly altered – this is to allow VW to focus on Europe’s fines business. The report states that VW expects to pay fines for failing to meet its European carbon dioxide reduction targets by the end the year. The company will now be focusing its efforts on the ID.4 hatchback and the ID.3 hatchback in Old Continent in order to reduce the fine at the end of this year. Multiple software issues are also affecting the ID.3, further limiting production of the ID.4. The U.S. will soon receive the Germany-made ID.4. VW will begin U.S.-wide deliveries in March 2021, instead of selling in ZEV states in 2020. A VW spokesperson confirmed this to Automotive News.
“We are executing the plan. We will have several hundred vehicles available for customer events and drive programmes early next year. The 50-state retail launch in March coincides with spring selling season. The spokesperson stated that we want this launch to have maximum impact with a steady pace once ID.4 arrives at dealers. Notable: The first ID.4 units to arrive in the U.S.A will be manufactured in Zwickau (Germany) alongside the ID.3. VW will begin making electric crossovers in its Chattanooga assembly plant by 2022 for the U.S. Market.
