The explosions in the new film of the franchise don’t seem to be as numerous.

The Transformers Bumblebee is getting his own movie. A trailer has just been released that suggests it won’t be as flashy and extravagant as the previous films. Fans of Michael Bay movies will be surprised to learn that Bumblebee no longer uses a Chevrolet Camaro as a disguise for his humanoid robot form. Instead, Bumblebee disguises himself as an old-school Volkswagen Beetle to return to his cartoon roots.

According to the Internet Movie Database the movie was set in 1987. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Hailee, a young mechanically inclined woman who finds a dying Beetle and attempts to restore it to its former glory. Bumblebee, a robot disguised as a robot, shows up at her garage. Although the trailer doesn’t show what happens next John Cena plays a soldier who seems to be following Bumblebee.

The trailer also shows a transformable fighter plane. This means that Bumblebee isn’t the only robot in this film. We wonder if Starscream is not the mechanical villain, given the trailer’s design. IMDB also lists voice actors for Optimus Prime, Barricade. Michael Bay will not be in front of the camera, marking another major change in the film franchise. Travis Knight, a relative newcomer to the filmmaking industry, will be directing. His only other film credit is the animated film Kubo, the Two Strings. However, he was also the lead animator for Coraline and ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls.

Trailer suggests that Steinfeld and Bumblebee are the core of the movie. There are scenes of Bumblebee saving her and Steinfeld diving into the water to rescue her. This is a significant change in a franchise known more for its characters and bad movies than for the stuff that blows up. This movie might have a new audience because of the change in tone and the young female lead. It’s out this Christmas.
