Silverado’s four-banger pickup engine takes on engines from Ford, Nissan Ram, Ram and Toyota.
General Motors announced a turbocharged four-cylinder engine this summer. The automaker refers to it as the Tripower. It is available in the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups. The company now makes it possible to see more details about the four-pot mill in the 2019 Silverado. Technically, the Silverado’s 2.7-liter turbo-four-cylinder engine is not the base engine. The 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder is standard on the volume-selling LT trim. However, the basic Work Truck and Custom Truck Bosss still have the old 4.3-liter naturally-aspirated V6.
The turbo-2.7-liter engine produces 310 horsepower (231 Kilowatts) as well as 348 pound-feet (472 Newton-meters). We are comparing it with the powerplants in 2018 Ford F-150 and 2018 Nissan Titan, 2019 Ram 1300, 2018 Toyota Tundra. Two Ford engines are included below, as Chevy’s new mill is roughly between the Blue Oval’s offerings. Rest are each model’s base powerplant.
Despite the lack of displacement, Chevy’s four cylinder is definitely a contender. It is tied with the Tundra’s 4.6-liter V8 for third in horsepower. It also ranks third in torque, behind Ford’s optional EcoBoost 2.7-liter EcoBoost or the larger, 5.6 liter V8 in Nissan Titan.Chevrolet has not yet provided an estimate of city fuel economy for its 2.7-liter engine. Let’s compare.
The new four-cylinder has a minimum of a three-way tie for the top spot in fuel economy. The EPA states that the Ford V6 flex-fuel engine also achieves 20 mpg in the city. This would increase the comparison. Chevy does not yet have information on the 2019 model year mileage for the 4.3-liter, V6. It is essential that a truck can work. With its latest announcement, we now have information about the Silverado’s 2.7-liter turbo engine’s payload capacity and towing capabilities. These figures will vary depending on the pickup’s configuration (cab style, drivetrain, bed length, etc.). These specs reflect the best numbers possible for each engine. The details for the 4.3-liter V6 engine in the Silverado are not yet available.
The Silverado’s turbocharged 4-cylinder looks great, once again. The pickup’s payload ranks third behind the Ram V6 and Ford EcoBoost (an optional engine) on the truck. The Tundra’s 4.6-liter V8 is slightly stronger in towing, at 7,200 pounds. We do not yet have information on all 2019 model year pickups. However, the Silverado’s 2.7-liter turbo starts from $38,395 It will be available in the fourth quarter.
