It would be powered by a powerful V6 turbodiesel motor.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has teased the second-generation Amarok nearly two years ago, but no details have been released about the midsize pickup. The new truck will use the T6 platform that was used in the ranger. This could allow for a more powerful version to compete with the Blue Oval Raptor. Ford’s new ute will be unveiled next month as a refresher.
The Australian magazine Cars Guide had a conversation with Ryan Davies, Director of VW Commercial Vehicles, about the future Amarok. Even if Ford doesn’t allow VW access to the Ranger Raptor parts bin, there’s a backup plan in case a hotter Amarok gets the green light. How? You can team up with Walkinshaw again.
The Walkinshaw engineering firm was previously known as HSV. Volkswagen has collaborated to create a beefier Amarok, based on the existing truck. The W580 was launched in October 2020. It had slightly less power and a more modern look than the Ranger Raptor in Australia.
Similar to the older truck, the second-gen Amaroktweaked in Walkinshaw would have a V6-cylinder TDI engine. VW Commercial Vehicles confirmed that the six-cylinder diesel will be available for the Ranger-based pickup. It is unclear if it will be a true TDI, meaning VW will use its engine or inherit the Ford oil-burner.
Ryan Davies spoke to Cars Guide regarding the possibility of a more powerful Amarok. It might be given the “R” suffix, or other special designation to emphasize its range-topping status. “There is an opportunity for everything in this pickup segment. It is definitely possible. We need to explore it now.”
The new Amarok will be revealed in the next months. This is due to VW’s tie up with Ford. Without Ford’s admission , the truck would have been retired. Although teasers suggest it is more than a Ranger rebadged, logic suggests that some body panels may be shared between the top and the underpinnings.
VW claims that the 2023 Amarok will measure 100 millimeters (3.93 in) longer than the predecessor and be more than 40mm (1.57 inch) wider. There will be a variety of four-cylinder engines below the V6 TDI. However, it is not clear if a gasoline mill will be available in some markets to match the Ranger. Ford will build the next Amarok alongside the Ranger counterpart at its Silverton, South Africa plant.
