The not-CX-5 will be available for purchase starting November 15.
The Mazda CX-5 is the automaker’s most popular model, with more than 130,000 units sold to date. Mazda will soon add another crossover with the same nameplate to strengthen the model, though it is a smaller variation.
Mazda confirmed that the CX-50 will be arriving as the beginning of the crossover program, which will extend to CX90. It won’t replace the CX-5, contrary to previous reports. It’s likely to increase Mazda’s US sales by 150,000 units – that is if we take Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto’s word according to Automotive News.
Marumoto says that the CX-50’s launch is an attempt to expand and strengthen the automaker’s SUV lineup. The US accounts for 70% of Mazda’s global sales. Mazda hopes to cement its position in the SUV-hungry marketplace with the CX-50.
Marumoto stated that the car was developed in response to North American customer requests. Therefore, the CX-50 is a high-demand product.
Marumoto stated that the CX-50 will look similar to the CX-5, but will have a wider tread area and more cargo space. This should be more in line with American customers’ needs.
Based on this week’s teaser, the Mazda CX-50 will be revealed worldwide on November 15. It will be in production by January 2022. It will be constructed side-by-side in the new Toyota Mazda factory in Alabama.
The pricing for the Mazda CX-50 has yet to be determined, but it is safe to assume that it will command a premium over the CX-5.
